A Sand Equivalent Shaker is a laboratory device used to determine the sand equivalent value of soil and aggregates. This test helps evaluate the proportion of fine particles in a sample that may be detrimental to the quality of the material, particularly for construction purposes like concrete, asphalt, or road base.

Purpose of Sand Equivalent Shaker:

The sand equivalent test is primarily used in the construction industry to assess the cleanliness and quality of fine aggregates (sand) and to help determine whether the material is suitable for specific construction applications. It measures the amount of fines (clay, silt, and dust) in sand or aggregate, which can affect the strength, durability, and workability of concrete or asphalt mixes.

How the Sand Equivalent Test Works:
  1. Sample Preparation:
    • A sample of sand or aggregate is mixed with a solution (usually a sodium hexametaphosphate or water) that disperses the particles.
  2. Shaking Process:
    • The sample is placed in a graduated cylinder with a specified amount of liquid and then agitated using a Sand Equivalent Shaker. The shaker provides the required agitation to separate the fine particles (clay and silt) from the coarser ones (sand and aggregate).
