A Vacuum Filtration Assembly is a laboratory apparatus used for separating solids from liquids through the process of filtration under reduced pressure (vacuum). This system uses a vacuum to pull the liquid through the filter medium, allowing for faster filtration than traditional gravity-based methods. It is commonly used in chemical laboratories, biological research, and industrial settings for a variety of applications like purifying liquids, concentrating samples, or isolating solid substances from liquids.

Components of a Vacuum Filtration Assembly:

1. Filter Flask (Vacuum Flask):

   • A thick-walled glass flask designed to withstand the vacuum pressure. It is used to collect the filtrate (the liquid that passes through the filter).
   • The flask is typically made of borosilicate glass to resist the effects of chemicals and heat.

2. Vacuum Pump:

   • The vacuum pump creates a reduced pressure within the filtration system, causing the liquid to be pulled through the filter medium more quickly.
   • The vacuum pump can be a mechanical, diaphragm, or water-based pump, depending on the application and the desired vacuum level.

3. Buchner Funnel:

   • A funnel-shaped piece of equipment with a flat perforated base, placed on top of the filter flask. It holds the filter paper or filter medium.
   • The funnel is typically made of porcelain or plastic, and it may come with a rubber sealing ring to create an airtight seal with the flask.

4. Filter Paper or Membrane Filter:

   • The filter medium placed in the Buchner funnel. It allows liquid to pass through while trapping solid particles.
   • Filter papers come in different grades and porosities, depending on the required separation and the size of the particles being filtered.
